Verifying a contractor with the Washington State department of Labor and Industries
Make sure your contractor is registered with Labor and Industries and is fully insured. You can find your contractor’s listing at http://www.lni.wa.gov/
Enter your contractor’s name or license number into the search bar. If nothing comes up, check with the contractor to make sure what the license number is or how they are listed in the database. It is not unusual for a company to not be found.
Make sure the company in the list is actually the one you are looking for. Once you find the company make sure that their bonding is current and their insurance is current. Not current? Ask the company about it. It is possible the contracts are being renewed. Look at how long they have been registered. That will tell you how stable they are as an on-going business.
The second thing to look at is the roofers license specialty. You will want to make sure they have a GENERAL license or ROOFING. If you might have any structural damage you are going to want GENERAL because a ROOFING license does not allow them to any work on rafters or stringers that might be involved in a repair.
If you find the roofer has only been licensed a year or two, is not licensed, or has the wrong license, walk away.
